Gleyber Torres can’t escape the Yankees talk.
The infielder signed a one-year, $15 million deal with the Detroit Tigers this offseason, marking the end of a seven-year stint in New York.
Torres is now in Lakeland, Fla. practicing with his new team after the Yankees let him go in free agency this winter.
“I feel I deserve to be with an organization that wants me,” Torres said Wednesday, via Dan Martin of the New York Post. “I’m here now and that’s the reason I’m here.”
Torres was then asked if he no longer wanted by the Yankees.
“I don’t know. Maybe you can ask him,” he said, referring to Yankees general manager Brian Cashman.
Torres, 28, made his major league debut in 2018 and has spent all seven years of his career in New York. He profiled as a breakout star in 2019 when he hit 38 home runs in 144 games, but has since hit .261/.332/.411 in five seasons (2,585 plate appearances).
Torres started the 2024 season in the leadoff spot for the Yankees before ultimately getting bumped down in the lineup in favor of Anthony Volpe. He hit .257 with a .709 OPS, 15 home runs and 63 RBI in 154 games. His numbers were mainly marred by an early season slump, and from mid-August — when he earned back his leadoff spot — until the end of the end of the season, he hit .313/.386/.454.
Last month, Cashman said on YES Network that he wanted Torres to move to third base when they traded for Jazz Chisholm Jr.
“Still?” Torres wrote in a now-deleted X post. “Just turn (the page).”
