The New Orleans Saints are entering a new chapter at quarterback following Derek Carr’s unexpected retirement due to a severe shoulder injury. Despite speculation, a reunion with former Saints quarterback Jameis Winston is not in the plans. Winston, who played for New Orleans from 2020 to 2023, is currently under contract with the New York Giants and is not expected to return to the Saints.

 

In the wake of Carr’s departure, the Saints are focusing on developing their young quarterbacks. The competition includes rookie Tyler Shough, second-year player Spencer Rattler, and third-year quarterback Jake Haener. The team also signed undrafted free agent Hunter Dekkers to add depth to the position.

Spencer Rattler, a fifth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, started six games last season, recording 1,317 passing yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions. While he faced challenges, Rattler set a franchise record for most passing yards by a rookie quarterback. Head coach Kellen Moore has emphasized giving all quarterbacks a fair opportunity to compete for the starting role during training camp.

 

As the Saints navigate this transitional period, they are committed to evaluating and developing their current roster of quarterbacks rather than seeking external veteran options like Winston.
