On February 11, 2024, a tragic shooting occurred at Lakewood Church. The perpetrator, 36-year-old Genesse Ivonne Moreno, entered the church with her 7-year-old son and opened fire using a .223-caliber semi-automatic rifle. She was fatally shot by two off-duty officers present at the scene. The incident resulted in injuries to a 47-year-old man and Moreno’s son, who sustained critical injuries requiring partial removal of his frontal lobe. The child has since been released from the hospital and is recovering .

In a separate incident, a plumber conducting repairs at Lakewood Church discovered over 500 envelopes containing cash and checks hidden within a wall. This find is believed to be connected to a 2014 theft in which $600,000 was reported stolen from the church’s safe. The plumber has since received a $20,000 reward for his discovery .
